Yesterday we touched on spreading hope not fear and even though we may not have control of circumstances, we do have a choice as to how we conduct our thoughts, feeling and emotions. Spending all our energies on fear based thoughts is not healthy for anybody, it can lead to many physical and mental problems over time. Our immune system becomes depressed and we can fall into, anger, frustration, selfishness, apathy, blame, and our perceptions can become exaggerated, irrational or simply we loose inner peace. Living in fear triggers our adrenal “Fight or Flight” primal responses too, we fight, run away or Freeze, these primal responses were to protect us from danger from wild animals and helped to protect our species. The natural function of this protective system includes when the danger is over our parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS) kicks in, relaxing and bringing all our organs back into balance regulating our heartbeat and breath etc. In today’s stressful world it seems that the danger or stressors never leave and many are living in prolonged fight or flight response, where eventually our parasympathetic system stops functioning effectively and we can suffer exhaustion and other physical symptoms or even Burn Out. Mental health issues can arise from this state too, as we can see from the rise in depression and suicides our society sees today.
Living in Isolation under this Lock Down can test us all regarding our mental health, we can fear the future, fear our own mortality, fear losing loved ones etc. etc. Many are facing their own thoughts, emotions and reactions for the first time without the distractions of work or socialising which is causing fear to rise up. We must remember that we do have a choice and we can face our thoughts and take back some control. Whatever your religion, spirituality or your own personal beliefs are, we need to act and be what we would like to see happen in our collective communities, we can pray, send out healing, think, focus and spread what we wish to see in our world or our own personal life. You may think this sounds impossible as we are in isolation but we still have many daily chances to live this reality, we can stop our thoughts when we find ourselves in unconscious or habitual negative thoughts, we can rationalise information we are fed by media. We can keep coming back to the present moment not the past or future as in each moment we can create what we want to see and be. We can be extra kind and supportive to family or friends on the phone, we can try to relax and be present with those we live with creating a healthy atmosphere, we can build them up and make them feel loved and cared for, we can deepen or renew our bonds. Of course this can be easy or hard depending on the state of mind of those around you, even so you can still act by example. Also remember our children or grandchildren are learning by example at this time too, how do you want them to cope in a crisis when they reach adulthood!
Many decisions and actions are made from fear based habits, thoughts and emotions, but if we can change our thoughts and attention to hope, this can be contagious and the more people around the world that start to live in hope the more chance we have of the people in power in the future, living and making decisions within this place of hope with foresight in the choices they make. Like so many things it doesn’t happen overnight, remember our young children are our future leaders, we have the choice to bring them up with kindness and compassion in their hearts for all of humanity and wildlife. This doesn’t mean shielding them from what goes on around us that is perceived as bad, it means teaching them to have hope to overcome despite the things they see happening, teaching them all actions have a reaction so when their time comes as adults they will live in integrity and not selfishly with the intelligence knowing problems can be solved or avoided by conscious choice.
In times like these of heightened emotions, and with many wanting to see a fairer less stressful world, hold on to your dreams of a better future for the generations to come. Don’t get saturated in fear fed media, rationalise the ever changing information we are told, you just need to google news from 2 weeks ago to see how information has changed. Live your authentic life, make better choices and above all spread kindness and hope. Hold on to this during isolation and live it with the people that you do have contact with, everything starts at home. To end today I will leave you with the reminder of the well known story below. Please stay safe and take precautions to protect yourself and loved ones including taking care of your mental health💜
One evening, an elderly Cherokee brave told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all. One is evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other wolf is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked, “Grandpa, which wolf wins?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one that you feed.“
